Astrigue is an Astronomy competition held in April every year for Secondary School students around Singapore. Secondary schools will be invited to send teams down to compete in this event to allow their students to gain a greater exposure to Astronomy, a subject not included in schools’ curriculums. This event is held over two days, at HCI and RJC. The event consists of two parts; the Convention and the Project Round. Scoring is based on these two main rounds and the finalists will enter the Final Round. In the Final Round, teams will have to buzz in their answers for questions flashed on screen to gain points to propel their teams to victory!
Students need not have any prior experience in Astronomy, they only need the passion to learn and the willingness to put in the effort.
If you would like your school to participate in this event, contact us at email@example.com!
The Singapore Astronomy Olympiad was first held in 2013, as a test of students’ abilities in Astronomy and Astrophysics. It serves to prepare students for the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, its international equivalent. Students are expected to solve open-ended questions that cover a wide range of topics, such as Celestial Mechanics and Radio Astronomy.
Prize winners of the SAO can be found here.
Preparing for the SAO is best done by reading up using Astronomy textbooks and practice. Good luck to all participants!
Night Under the Stars
Night Under the Stars is a biannual stargazing event held within Hwa Chong Institution at HCI’s main campus on Bukit Timah Road. This gives non-club members the opportunity to bond with their classmates and friends under the majesty of the night sky. The dates of this event will vary year by year depending on the weeks and the moon. To remain updated on the dates, you can follow our Facebook page @hcastronomy or our Instagram @hc_astro.
AstroChallenge is an Astronomy competition that tests students’ skills in Practical and Theoretical Astronomy, pitting them against the best and the brightest from schools around Singapore. This competition comprises two categories, the Secondary School and the Junior College level categories. Members of the Hwa Chong Astronomy Club will get an opportunity to compete in AstroChallenge , which is held annually in mid-June. Find out more here!
The NYP/IPS Astronomy Retreat is an overseas camp held in Malaysia or Indonesia every year during the June holidays. Club members can seize the opportunity to get away from the light-polluted skies of Singapore. This gives them a once-in-a-lifetime experience to admire the beauty of the unpolluted night sky and study celestial objects more clearly. This event allows Club members to interact with the local Astronomy community, including members of other Astronomy Clubs and members of the public!
